The summer that’s not
This summer has to be the wettest summer in the North Island and the top of the South Island that we have had for years. We barely seem to have one or two fine days a fortnight.
The rain is not heavy here in Hamilton, but is persistent, and we feel that it would be nice if it stopped for longer periods of time.
Many holiday makers in the North Island, especially campers, have had their holidays spoiled and in some cases washed out by the persistent rain, which saturated their campsites.
Though it isn’t unusual to have a reasonable amount of rain at this time we feel that this year it has been more excessive. You see, in our part of the world it is summer and most people have their annual holidays from Christmas Day to about mid-January. Schools are on holiday at the same time, and go back on the first week in February.
You might almost think that the weather was controlled by a grumpy human, as the weather can often be bad right up until schools go back, then the sun comes out and good weather prevails until about mid-autumn, which is around April. It will almost certainly be the same this year. I hope it clears up then anyway.
I guess it does no good to get too worked up about the weather, and I must admit that bad weather while camping can make the holiday more memorable, for one reason or another. I remember from my single days of camping away with mates at the beach. Especially when someone tears a hole in the top of the tent and it rains soon afterwards! Yes, it happened to us! But being typical teenagers we survived and made the best of it. Ah…. Those were the days!
So I guess rain or not, those on holiday will enjoy themselves, and if not it will at least make them appreciate their home comforts more.

Rains and storms have always fascinated me - when I'm at home listening to the splatter on windows of course! but too much of it dampens the holiday!
I understand your frustration, weather is so inconveniently unpredictable, isn't it? The main event on our island are the TT Motorbike races, and each year people come from all over the globe to spectate or even to participate in it. It's scheduled at the very height of our summer - but it's always hit or miss whether it will be glorious sunshine, or a complete washout (the races don't run if it rains).
I feel so sorry for the visitors who've invested their time and money to come over on those years when the weather behaves so badly!
Oh dear, bad luck about the rainy weather. I have cousins who are at their batch on the Coromandel right now, they are probably cursing the rain too.
Here in S Ontario Canada it's very mild and hardly any snow, very unusual for a Canadian winter.
I remember wet camping trips well. I have since referred to cool, rainy days as vacation weather. ;)
sounds like our summer was. we had the wettest year on record in nearly a century.
Here in the US Pacific Northwest we can certainly relate. Last year was especially bad, with summer not arriving until late August. We're still grumbling about it.
Ruby, yes, I agree...
Carol, yes, the rain can spoil any open-air activity. Are you on the Isle of Man?
Shammickite, yes, I don't think Coromandel had very good weather either. So as our summer is taking a while to begin, so is your winter.
Hilary, yes, I think your definition may be right.:-)
Michelle, ah, so we must be following your summer.
Linda, so we are having the same as you did. - Dave
Hello, Dave! There is a special award for your blog on mine. If you wish, please accept the award and pass it on to 5 other blogs that you appreciate. Cheers, Ruby!
I'm glad I didn't plan a camping holiday this summer.
Well its not too much fun when the vacation is spent being soggy. Hope there are a few days of warm sunshine to enjoy.
I too have spent many a camping trip in the rain. Not as much fun when the kiddos were still in diapers though. Things could get a bit tricky.
Enjoy your Holiday anyway Dave.
Ruby, thank you. That was nice of you.
Carolyn, yes, me too!
Sue, thank you. I can imagine the problems you would have had with little ones :-) Dave
Maybe you all need to come to the U.S. for the holidays. Our weather here has been unusually warm! I have only seen one light snowfall and am actually missing a winter.
Hi Dave,
we too here in the Netherlands have a very bad and wet summer behind us. We are now in the winter, but frozen or snow I've seen yet.
When you is not much better, I read it, so I hope it is all right.
Greetings, Helma
Tabor, I wish I could visit your country. The weather sound good.
Helma,we must be following your weather I think? - Dave
